Glossary of Automobile Insurance Terms
Bodily Injury - Bodily harm, including sickness, disease or death for which you may become legally responsible due to an auto accident.
Collision Coverage - Covers loss to your vehicle caused by collision with another vehicle or object.
Comprehensive Coverage (Other than Collision) - Covers physical damage to your vehicle for losses by fire, theft, vandalism, falling objects, and various other perils.
Medical Payment Protection - This coverage pays reasonable medical expenses for you or members of your family, up to the chosen limit, if you are injured in an auto accident or as a pedestrian struck by an auto. This protection is extended to others who are injured while occupying your auto.
Personal Injury Protection Coverage (PIP) - Provides coverage for injury, death, loss of services, and loss of income suffered by you and your passengers due to an auto accident. - no longer available benefit as of 7/1/2003
Property Damage - Offers protection against liability for damage to the property of another party. An example of property damage is the other person's vehicle.
Rental Reimbursement - Pays a stated maximum for rental costs should you need to rent a vehicle due to a covered loss.
Towing - Pays for towing and labor costs at a stated maximum in the event your vehicle is disabled.
Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury Liability (UM) - Provides coverage up to stated limits when a covered person is involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist who is at fault for the accident.
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage (UMPD) - Pays for damages to your vehicle should an uninsured driver cause an accident resulting in damage to your vehicle.
